Can't this be just mirrored from 2861.dat?

No, this is not that simple: Many people are using custom stud.dat files where a LEGO logo is present. Simply mirroring this part would also mirror that logo, so it would appear ugly.

The common practice for solving this problem is normally subfiling,
which I would recommend here, too:
the whole part without studs gets put into a subfile,
and then the left and right variants use that subfile
and add the studs.
For example, you can see this principle with most "Wing..."
parts. I like that approach very much (because I *am* using
such studs) and would like to have this part organized this way, too.
Can easily be done.

Incorrect geometry on branch - does not align with a curved track section - see http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/whoward69/LDraw/9vPoints/switchbadgeometry.png

For comparision, see the RC point mock-up done by Thomas Burger (GrapeApe) - http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/whoward69/LDraw/9vPoints/switchgoodgeometry.png (original B/Shelf folder - http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=203196, original Lugnet post - http://news.lugnet.com/cad/?n=14079)

(keeping hold)

correcting myself: all studs are mirrored.
this is probably the result of how this part had been created, i.e.,
by mirroring its Left counterpart.

a long discussion has been led where to put the origin for
train points. after initiating it some years ago, the discussion
slept in and did not consolidate the existing parts on the PT.
We last week took up the discussion again and solved it.
The result was that the origin for train track parts should be
at the center of the straight section. When updating this part,
this part should as well get that origin.

This file, and 2861, are "Shortcuts", and many of the subparts should become parts,
each with their own separate partnumber.

Many of the files still use 383, (crome plated plastic) on the metal parts.

All of the studs are still mirrored.

I have added also "Straight" to the title,
because this file will become the point in "straight" position.
There will in future be a ...c00 which will be it in "branching" position.
See 73696.dat and 73696c00.dat for the analogy.
IMHO, c01 then should become 2859.dat plus the yellow point handle
http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/2866
, and c02 should become 2859c00 plus the yellow point handle

I know that it sometimes is difficult to keep up with Steffens speed,
but the last versions of this file, and 2861, is a step backwards.

This part is now corrupt. Please restore Steffens version.

Sorry, Kevin, but your previous submit undid all my changes
I had done yesterday, I think you just have worked locally
on an outdated version. I'm restoring my version right now.
Especially, I had factored-out the main point part into the s00
subpart, so this file will properly be a shortcut.
Regarding the origin, I think this train point should have
the origin exactly there where all other currently official
train points have it, that is at the center of the straight track.

good info!
we should be very careful here with the c00, c01, c02, ...
numbering to keep the best possible analogy with
the already official 4.5V and 12V train points
Steffen [Steffen]
Senior Part Reviewer

my suggestion is to renumber this to a u....dat number and KEEP
its current c00, c01, c02, ... assemblies,
as they are already analogous to the official other points 4.5V and 12V.
the only flaw here is that number 2859 is wrong, so u....dat is the way to go IMHO

There is a system to how C is meant to be used (I should know, Steve Bliss and I developed it): use the most visible design ID (here, 2859), and use C for an assembly that TLG would have a separate item number for. Adding 2866 and calling it an assembly is non-standard usage (as an example). My comments were made for Chris as admin as he requested in the forum, regardless.
