The -8 is the identifier at all the parts that are using it.
There is another ball joint with a larger diameter:

so imho it is a valid extension

thats another kind of ball joint (mainly used in constraction and Bionicle)
that ball joint is normally named Towball (used in City sets)
I guess there are two different sockets: loose and tight (with friction)
but the small ball itself is always the same?
