shouldn't there be a separate assembly only for the box, without the lid?

Yeah, I wondered too... I tend to think it's overkill, but... Other opinions?
What about having only the bottom and sides as an assembly? The lid is anyway loose.
I though I bought one, until I unpacked it and it was just bricks :-D

I agree. I think a builder might want to use the complete box, without a lid.
All 4 complete box shortcuts should only contain a lid + an assembled box (without lid).
