DO the k01 and k02 donor files need a cylinder as well?

Could be done that way, but it allows to do the straight version with a single cylinder (and the template for LdCad works fine this way). See https://forums.ldraw.org/thread-27453-post-50827.html#pid50827

as a part, k1 can't be mirrored in a model. hence k2...
