I think that we should replace "*" with "|" for all third party parts, because "|" is lexicographically greater than letters, while "*" is lesser, so third-party prefixes would get sorted properly.

Sorry, my mistake - we'll make a public announcement soon. Basically, third party parts aimed at the AFOL user will be allowed in the LDraw library, named tNNNN.dat. Their descriptions will start with '| <manufacturer> ...', so ensure they sort after regular parts.

BUT: Will that decision _replace_ the existing parts which use "*" as prefix instead of "|"? There should not be 2 separate prefixes IMHO.

Yes, admin edit are kind of silent... * was changed to | on all files.
