Is it possible to bend the long, thin sticker material in real life, so that the sticker can be applied parallel to the top edge of the hull?
This "folded" version doesn't look good, or right.

Agreed.
Did a bit research on Ebay - While this does seem indeed to be tricky in real life, it looks like it is possible to align this to the base part's edge.
