should the "oval" use a 2-4 tang at the bottom to reduce the amount of long thin triangles? more vertices, but better triangulaion...

That would not get rid of the long triangles at the bottom.
Is there good practice to add unnecessary vertices to avoid long triangles? - I am not aware of that.

If yes, I could add a frame around each letter or group of letters.

it is "allowed" to put additional vertices on the center/along the outer edgelines...
for example here: https://library.ldraw.org/parts/2325
for the rest: idk which weighs heavier, reducing long triangles or less vertices...
