why the shifted quads around the center axlehole? some result in quite bad triangulation

the two bottom rigns overlap each other and the two flat supports (maybe just 1-8 prims outside, or not even prims because of the pattern?)

Explanation on versions:
a - no axle connector in central tube, used around ca. 1999-2001 (some 2002/2003 sets might have had leftover stock). Hole goes through entire part.
b - axle connector at 45 degree (not yet in LDraw), used in 2002 only?
c - axle connector at 90 degree, used since 2003 (not in LDraw)
d - same as c, but with minor difference in axle connector design, not sure when this started appearing, but it seems to be the current version
