BL as well as RE list it with "Red-Brown" hair. Brown is the wrong color here.

I see Rust (261) or Dark_Red (320) as a substitute for the color for the hair and eyebrows. Whereby I think Rust is the better choice. It's closer to a reddish brown. Reddish brown is too dark in my opinion.
Does anyone have a different opinion, otherwise I will make the change?

Rust looks close. Consider Earth_Orange (366).

"Red-Brown" is the Bricklink name.
We should use the LDraw name of this colour.

The Red-Brown color is not available from Lego, Bricklink or Rebrickable. The color Reddish brown is available. But it is darker. The term Red-Brown is used in the description at Bricklink and Rebrickable.
The color used is Earth Orange (366).
I will change Red-Brown to Earth Orange.

Regarding the color I would say it's Lego's Red Orange (BL's Fabuland Red I think? =LDraw Color 508). There exists a Duplo cow in that color and it's an almost perfect match on the real part. I think Earth Orange looks way to light for those early reddish-brown hair prints and most other colors that come close weren't introduced around that time.

However there's a slight problem here: Lego's official hex code for that color looks nothing like the real one. The code used in LDD and most other materials is #FF8014 like the LDraw one. The hex value found in 1996 vector instructions (depicting exactly this head) looks way closer to the real thing: #A42A22.

And on a side note: I think that this part does exist in at least 2 major variants. I have one from the 2004 Y-Wing & TIE Fighter set (probably the last time this appeared) which looks considerably more close to standard Reddish Brown (or maybe even regular old Brown) than all older ones, which have this specific reddish shade.

From Joshua:
"It came in different colors. The two I have at-hand match TLG color 13 Red Orange (LDRAW 508 Fabuland_Red) and TLG color 25 Earth Orange (LDRAW 6 Brown)"

Reminded me of this image I made years ago, as a test. Fabuland Red needs correction.

@Magnus, I took your picture, adjusted white/Black/50% Gray and measured two points (light/dark) with a 51-pixel-eyedropper: db6c3c and b0330e. Finally I mixed them and came up with: C65127 which is the color we should go for Fabuland red.

We should therefor make two heads. This one:

Agree, the new color looks way better.

However regarding the second version of this part, I think it's actually more 70 Reddish_Brown than 6 Brown. I think that it's both a closer match and makes more sense in relation to release year (2004), where (old) Brown was already discontinued.

I checked the heads in the era where this color might have been used as ink (1978-2003) and found 9 heads which probably have hair in this color as well. I am especially sceptical towards use of Dark Orange prior to 1994, as this color seemingly didn't exist before that year and the various Fabuland browns and oranges come very close. Regular Orange and Dark Red were also introduced much later.

Real Brown (6) hair prints seemingly didn't appear until 1996, where no new heads with Fabuland Red were introduced (with a single exception, but that was caused by the need to match the older head this was based off). Two of those heads (including this Space Police one) were still produced after the color change, so both might have a Fabuland Red and Reddish Brown version. The heads in question are:

3626bp42 - Minifig Head with Dark Orange Moustache, Beard and Messy Hair Pattern (also had a Red version in 1992)
3626bp3q - Minifig Head with Sideburns and Droopy Moustache Brown Pattern
3626bp46 - Minifig Head with Eye Patch, Dark Orange Moustache, Beard and Messy Hair Pattern (also in Red for Captain Redbeard)
3626bp48 - Minifig Head with Eye Patch, Earth Orange Stubble and Messy Hair Pattern
3626bp69 - Minifig Head with Headset Over Earth Orange Hair and Eyebrows Pattern (Reddish Brown version in 2004)
3626bp66 - Minifig Head with Blue Headband and Dark Orange Hair Pattern
3626bp7a - Minifig Head with Brown Hair over Eye and Black Eyebrows Pattern (Reddish Brown version in 2004?)
3626bpab - Minifig Head with Aquanaut, Green Angled Sunglasses and Brown Hair Pattern
3626bpx42 - Minifigure, Head Female with Red Lips and Headset Pattern (not yet in LDraw, very similar to 3626bp69)

What do you think?

is the color difference maybe just from aging?
the two heads on orions pic also look like that, the upper one has more playwear (torso too)
these prints are sometimes compound colors...

Please keep in mind that these are prints on a yellow head. Matching prints to our colour codes will always be a guess.
Don't know here, if they even wanted this print to match a plastic colour like Fabuland Red.
To me, it looks like a good choise, and if Willy will change the RGB, even better.

Since there are two heads that differ only in the color of the hair and eyebrows, the constant part was moved to a subfile for reuse.
